The American Dental Association provides a series of recommendations to help you maintain good oral health. This includes consistently performing a daily routine that includes brushing your teeth once each morning and evening, as well as remembering to floss once every day. The ADA further recommends having a dentist perform a routine dental checkup every six months.

This outpatient appointment starts with cleaning away any traces of tartar while also polishing your teeth. Once this is done. our dentist will inspect your mouth for signs of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems. If we detect a problem area we might recommend a preventative measure to keep it from becoming an active oral health condition.

All dental checkups also include a basic screening for early signs of oral and pharyngeal cancer. This is often performed at the end of the dental exam. Early detection of these series oral health maladies can improve treatment success rates.

The oral cancer screening calls for our dentist to inspect your tongue, cheek, gums and throat for changes in color or other abnormalities. If you have noticed a problem with your throat or mouth be sure to let our dentist know.

If a problem area is found we may refer you to an oncologist or another oral care specialist to confirm the diagnosis. This is often a critical first step in developing an effective treatment strategy.
